sometimes when we have an image we want to achieve a certain effect but we can only do that in the digital darkroom or by using a filter. if you can use a filter you’d be better off rather than spending extra time in the darkroom. using the filter only takes a minute to apply and the quality of your image will end up being better than if you spent 30 minutes in the darkroom trying to “correct” your image.
in this example we are using a cokin p series model 197 (aka. the sunset filter). you can see other colored filters from cokin here: http://cokin.com/.

here we see that the sunset filter has been applied giving the image an overall warming effect.

but being the observant photog that you are you notice that the foreground is dark and lifeless. in the next post well apply both the sunset and nd grad filters to achieve what we are really after.
