alaska plant life and crickets

while picking blueberries a month ago now (actually cheri was picking and i was, well, you know…) i came across this great looking plant that was beginning to change colors for the fall season.  anyone know what kind of plant it is?

while photographing this i kept hearing a cricket which kept alluding my eyesight.  finally i got a good look at him.  when i moved in on him he held real still so i just kept getting closer until he was only about 6 inches from the tip of my lens.  i had the 24-85 macro lens on so him being close wasn’t an issue.

the cricket photo was shot at f4 for 2 reasons:

  1. limited depth of field to draw attention to the subject
  2. being this close (6 inches) from the subject and zoomed to 85mm i wanted to be sure to have a fast shutter speed and by maximizing the lens’s aperture i was able to shoot this at 1/160.
