The Cokin P121M ND grad filter is a very useful filter to have around.
This is a photograph I took last fall. It looks OK but nothing to great. The sky is highlighted with some blinkies where the sun was setting and the foreground was a bit dark.

By using the ND grad filter we can fake the camera into thinking the sky is darker and therefore we can “bring up” the foreground so we can see it more clearly.

Just look at the huge difference between the first image and the last. Wow, it’s amazing that the little ND grad can do so much.
We’ll be teaching this technique and many more at the next Alaska Photo Workshop on August 7 & 8, 2010. If you’d like to come along on the adventure to Maclaren River Lodge be sure to drop me an email to sign up today. We have limited spacing and the deadline to signup is July 24th so hurry!
