In Relation to Your Subject

Where do you stand in relation to your subject?  This is another topic which we’ll cover in the next Alaska Photo Workshop in August.

In this shot I’m down in the dirt with the sun at my back and therefore the subject (fireweed) is front-lit.  I like the dark background but I wish the fireweed was more of its true color.

In the shot below I’ve moved onto the side of the road and the subject is now back -lit.  I like the background with the soft, blown out clouds and the fact that the fireweed is now closer to the color I remember it.
