When shooting for a stitched panorama, shoot verticals not horizontals to give your panoramic conversion software more data to work with.
I would also add that shooting verticals also introduces less lens distortion because of the way your sensor is laid out in your camera. Think about it, from the top to the bottom of your sensor you are using less “lens real estate” than you are from the left to the right of your sensor. Typically the farther from the center you go from your lenses the more distortion you have, so by staying closer to the middle you have less.
This is an 8 image panoramic of the Maclaren River Valley looking north to the Alaska Range. This was taken August 8th during the August Alaska Photo Workshop. I love the light hitting the peak in the distance, the fog rolling into the valley, and Marlaren Glacier in the distance.
